Siri, Apple’s own voice-controlled digital personal assistant, certainly looks impressive, what with its ability to accept and process voice commands in order to do everything from setting alarms to picking a restaurant for dinner, booking an elite table at it and then finding directions to it, to simply finding the latest celebrity dirt on Lindsay Lohan. But what if Siri isn’t your thing? Check out these alternatives:
Google Voice Actions
Google Voice Actions offers what it labels as a “more beta” (which may not necessarily mean “better than”) alternative to what Apple unveiled this past Tuesday about Siri. Voice Actions aspire to be what Siri is – a speech-driven, voice-controlled app that allows completely vocal interactiveness with the device. Of course, since the recent unveiling, you better believe that Google will be working hard to improve Voice Actions and hopefully outshine Siri.
Nuance Dragon Go!
Currently available only for the iPhone (get it on the Apps Store), Nuance offers a variety of speech-initiated features, including getting the weather and looking up maps, finding local eats and movies to watch, play music, and provide general search results. Nuance is known for their speech technology, and since the company plays a role int he powering of the Siri app, it’s not a surprise to see that they’ve released an app of their own.
Vlingo, a known Nuance competitor, has rolled out an app of their own. Vlingo seeks to replace the void Siri left when it became exclusive to Apple, and its app is available for both Android and the iPhone.
As you can see, if Siri isn’t your thing, or if Siri can’t be your thing because you don’t own an iPhone, there’s no need to fret, as plenty of alternatives are abound!
